The DTF Printing Process
Design Preparation and Printing: The design is created or prepared on a computer and then printed onto a special PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) film using a DTF printer. These printers use specialized water-based pigment inks, including a white ink layer. The white ink is a crucial element as it creates the foundation for the colored design, allowing for vibrant prints on both light and dark fabrics.
Powder Application: Immediately after the design is printed, a hot-melt adhesive powder is applied evenly over the wet ink. The powder adheres only to the printed areas of the film.
Curing: The film, with the powdered design, is then cured. This is typically done using a curing oven or a heat press (in a no-contact or hovering mode) to melt the adhesive powder. This process turns the powder into a solid, adhesive layer on the back of the print.
Heat Transfer: The cured film is placed onto the garment, and a heat press is used to transfer the design. The heat and pressure activate the adhesive, causing the design to bond with the fabric.
Peeling: Once the transfer is complete, the film is carefully peeled away, leaving the design permanently on the garment. Depending on the type of film used, this is done either immediately while the print is still hot ("hot-peel") or after it has cooled down ("cold-peel").
